How to keep track of every appointment when you have kids
One child means a pediatrician, a dentist and maybe an eye doctor. Two or three children, and suddenly you're managing a dozen appointments a year, many of them booked six months in advance. It's no surprise things slip. At one children's clinic, 38% of families missed their appointment when they didn't get a reminder.
You don't need a perfect memory. You need a system that remembers for you. Here's one that works.
1. Write it down the moment it's booked
The most common reason appointments get missed is that they never made it into a calendar. When the front desk says "we'll see you in six months," add it before you leave the parking lot. A card in your wallet or a note in your bag is easy to lose.
2. Keep everyone in one place
Separate calendars for each child, or one calendar for work and another for home, is how double-bookings happen. Put every family member's appointments in a single list so you can see the whole month at once and spot clashes early.
3. Set two reminders, not one
One reminder the day before gives you time to arrange a ride, swap a shift or pull a child out of school. A second one a couple of hours before gets you out the door. Research backs this up: a study published in The Permanente Journal found that multiple reminders worked better than a single one, especially for appointments that were likely to be missed.
4. Note what to bring
Insurance card, vaccination record, a list of questions, the medication your child is taking. Add it to the appointment itself, so you see it when the reminder goes off, not when you're already in the waiting room.
5. Share the load
If two adults are raising the kids, both of you should be able to see what's coming up. Then it doesn't all depend on one person's phone, and either of you can step in when plans change.
6. Book the next one before you leave
Checkups and cleanings come around on a schedule. Scheduling the next visit while you're still at the front desk is the easiest way to keep them from drifting.
